Is the Neocatechumenal Way A Cult?

This is a question that is asked many times.  There are many definitions of what a cult is.  According to the Free Dictionary, a cult is defined as "a religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader."

The Neocatechumenal Way has a founder, and that founder follows the Pope. Just as the Apostle Paul went out and established Churches, he told his congregation to follow him just as he follows Christ.  The Bible tells us to obey our Bishops because they were called by God (Hebrews 13:17).  There are many men and women whom God calls.  The important thing one should ask is.....does Kiko view the Pope as his leader to follow?  I say yes, because he goes to Rome to appear before the Pope when he is called or when he wants to speak to the Pope. He is seen in audience with the Pope.

Is the Neocatechumenal Way an extremist or false?  The fact that we have the endorsement of three Popes including the present one makes it difficult for anyone to say that the Way is false.  The fact that the Statutes and Catechetical Directory (which consist of 14 volumes, if I am not mistaken) was approved by the Holy See makes it difficult for anyone to say that the Way is false.

Are the people in the Way living in unconventional manner?  The people in the Way still live at home.  They don't live together.  The priests and nuns live as all other priests and nuns.  Family missions also live in a home, and work like everyone else in the community.

Are we under the guidance of an authoritarian leader?  We are under the guidance of the Catholic Church like the rest of all Catholics.  It was the Church who instructed Kiko to change the way we receive communion.  In the past, members would receive communion sitting down.  Members of the Way have obeyed the Pope by receiving communion standing up.  Also, the members of the Way do not celebrate with a photo of Kiko in their celebration.  The icons are always of Mary and/or Jesus.

I would also add that anyone can always leave the Way.  In a cult, it would be very difficult to leave.  That is not so with the Neocatechumenal Way. Furthermore, as a Catholic walking in the Way.....we are taught to always follow Christ and His Church.  Christ is our King.
