Food For Thought

The following came from part of Pope Francis homily in the Easter Vigil on April 15, 2017.  You can read the entire homily here.

"That is what this night calls us to proclaim: the heartbeat of the Risen Lord. Christ is alive! That is what quickened the pace of Mary Magdalene and the other Mary. That is what made them return in haste to tell the news (Mt 28:8). That is what made them lay aside their mournful gait and sad looks. They returned to the city to meet up with the others.

Now that, like the two women, we have visited the tomb, I ask you to go back with them to the city. Let us all retrace our steps and change the look on our faces. Let us go back with them to tell the news… In all those places where the grave seems to have the final word, where death seems the only way out. Let us go back to proclaim, to share, to reveal that it is true: the Lord is alive! He is living and he wants to rise again in all those faces that have buried hope, buried dreams, buried dignity. If we cannot let the Spirit lead us on this road, then we are not Christians.

Let us go, then. Let us allow ourselves to be surprised by this new dawn and by the newness that Christ alone can give. May we allow his tenderness and his love to guide our steps. May we allow the beating of his heart to quicken our faintness of heart."

    1. God is a merciful God, longsuffering and slow to anger.

  2. Christianity of the faith of hope and not desperation. God raised His only begotten Son, the second person of the Holy Trinity, to give us hope. Denying Jesus as the Son of God and denying His resurrection is denying hope, denying salvation and denying the forgiveness of sins. If you deny these things, not much is left for you except extinction from His Kingdom!

Except for the Jews, who, as Diana has said, can be saved even though they deny "Jesus as the Son of God " and "His resurrection "

See where silly NCW teaching gets you?

    2. Dear Anonymous at 11:00 am,

I never said such things. Do not put words in my mouth. The Catholic Church does not condemn anyone to Hell.

    3. Diana, you are right the church does not condemn to hell. It is only the Judge who can make judgment who is Jesus Christ. If you make judgment and condemn, then you cut out the Judge and take His role on yourself. But who can take the role of God on her/himself?

The heaven is pictured in a light sketch as the "bosom of Abraham". But it should not be tied to a man. We don't even know if Abraham is in heaven because that would be judgment on him. We should rather say that heaven is being in the presence of Jesus. He is enthroned at the right hand of God the Father.

Heaven is also not temporal or spatial. Time and space, being part of the physical world only, are lost in the presence of God! There is no time and no location in heaven. There is only one thing, Jesus Christ. Eternal life is being with Him.

Being in the hell is being apart from Jesus. Now, if you deny Jesus as Son of God and deny His resurrection, then being apart from Him might not crush you. Jews don't even want to be in the presence of Jesus because they do not believe in Him. That is logical and makes sense. But, believe me, nothing compares to be with Jesus! He is the very meaning of eternal life.

You may ask how is afterlife or damnation eternal if there is no concept of time? Well, you are right! Eternal salvation and eternal damnation are not "eternal" in time or space, because that physical features are only the horizontal view of your created existence. You were created by God a complex being with body and soul. Beyond the horizontal view of time and space, there is a vertical view of spirituality that goes deep into the texture of your existence. This is the dwelling place of your soul. Your eternal fate is not physical, but spiritual. That is why eternal life and eternal damnation are in the center of who you are and who you will be once you depart from the physical world.

    4. Dear Anonymous at 4:37 pm,

A person cannot deny whom he/she has never heard. Hindu children, for example, grow up never reading the Bilbe or knowing Christ. The Church teaches that those that through no fault of their own does not know the Gospels but nevertheless seek to do God's will can still have salvation.
