The Coup Against Pope Francis

And we think that conspiracy exists only on Guam.  At any rate, here are a few updates:

1.  The man who wrote Archbishop Vigano's letter was journalist Marco Tossati, who is a critic of Pope Francis.  You can read the story here.

2.  After the letter was published in the media, Archbishop Vigano disappeared and went into hiding.  No one knows where he is, not even the journalist who wrote the letter.

3.  The story below can be found here.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CNN)Even before Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano called for Pope Francis to resign on Sunday, the two men had a history, and it wasn't good.
Vigano, the former Vatican ambassador to the United States, angered some church officials in 2015 by arranging a meeting at the Vatican's embassy in Washington between the Pope and Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who refused to sign same-sex marriage certificates.
During his trip to the United States, the Pope had tried to stay above the country's culture wars. Vigano foisted Francis right into the fray. The Vatican, which tried to distance the Pope from Davis, was displeased. Two years later, Francis quietly accepted Vigano's resignation.
    On Sunday, Vigano struck back.
In an 11-page "testimony" released to conservative Catholic media, Vigano accused Francis of ignoring his warnings about Archbishop Theodore McCarrick, who led the Archdiocese of Washington from 2000-2006. Under Francis' orders, McCarrick resigned from the College of Cardinals last month after accusations that he molested an altar boy and seminarians.
But Vigano said the Pope earlier had lifted restrictions on McCarrick put in place by Pope Benedict XVI, who resigned in 2015.
"In this extremely dramatic moment for the universal Church," Vigano wrote, "he must acknowledge his mistakes and, in keeping with the proclaimed principle of zero tolerance, Pope Francis must be the first to set a good example for cardinals and bishops who covered up McCarrick's abuses and resign along with all of them."
Vigano's accusations come as Francis and his church are trying to contain a quickly escalating sexual abuse crisis that has spread from Australia to Pennsylvania. In Ireland, a country devastated by its own clergy abuse scandals, the Pope repeatedly apologized last weekend for the sins and crimes of church leaders, lamenting that "some members of the hierarchy didn't own up to these painful situations and kept silent."
On the plane ride home, the Pope himself kept silent about Vigano's accusations.
"I will not say a single word about this," he said. "I believe the statement speaks for itself. And you have the sufficient journalistic ability to make your conclusions. It's an act of trust."
While journalists dig for the truth, and the Pope keeps silent, Vigano's letter has emerged as a sort of Rorschach test for Catholics: Many conservative Catholics say the Pope must go. Liberal Catholics accuse the archbishop of launching a coup d'etat against his boss.
"This is a coup operation against Pope Francis," said Massimo Faggioli, a professor of Catholic history and theology at Villanova University in Pennsylvania.
"It is a stunning convergence between the personal agenda of Vigano and the theological agenda of those who do not like Pope Francis."
Turning the tables on Vigano, the Archdiocese of Washington suggested his tenure in the United States should itself be investigated.
A 2014 memo shows that Vigano himself demanded that evidence be destroyed in an attempt to end an investigation against a former archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis, according to CNN Vatican analyst John Allen.
But the Bishop of Phoenix, the Most Rev. Thomas J. Olmsted, issued a statement defending Vigano, whom he said he has known since 1979.
"Although I have no knowledge of the information that he reveals in his written testimony of August 22, 2018, so I cannot personally verify its truthfulness, I have always known and respected him as a man of truthfulness, faith and integrity," Olmsted wrote.

    A 'hit list'

Even before he tussled with Francis, Vigano was adept at courting controversy.
In 2011, when he ran the Vatican City State, the Italian churchman clashed with his superiors, accusing Vatican officials of corruption. The charges became enmeshed in the Vatileaks scandal, when former Pope Benedict's butler leaked documents detailing the infighting.
"Vigano presented himself as a whistle blower," said John Thavis, who was the Rome bureau chief for Catholic News Service at the time. "But he also had a persecution complex. He saw conspiracy theories all around him."
Thavis said Benedict didn't seem impressed by Vigano's views. "He sent him 4,000 miles away, to the United States."
Vigano was appointed the Vatican's US ambassador in October 2011. For the most part, he kept a low profile, though some accused the archbishop of breaking with church protocol by appearing at an anti-gay marriage rally at the Supreme Court. (Typically, Vatican ambassadors -- known as nuncios -- do not publicly involve themselves in another country's internal political debates.)
Besides representing the Pope, nuncios typically advise popes on whom to appoint as bishops.
In his letter Sunday, Vigano seemed bitter that Francis had relied on other Vatican officials for recommendations, saying that "the nunciature in Washington was now out of the picture in the appointment of bishops."
Instead, Vigano said, the appointment of several bishops to top posts in Chicago and New Jersey were "orchestrated" by McCarrick and his successor in Washington, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, as well as Cardinal Oscar Maradiaga, a Honduran who is one of the Pope's closest advisers.
More salaciously, Vigano said the Catholic Church is plagued by "homosexual networks" that "act under the concealment of secrecy and lies with the power of octopus tentacles, and strangle innocent victims and priestly vocations, and are strangling the entire Church."
Those "networks," Vigano said, were complicit in a "conspiracy of silence" that allowed McCarrick's and others' alleged abuses to continue.
In statements, Wuerl of Washington and Cardinal Joseph Tobin of Newark, New Jersey, both of whom were named in Vigano's letter, denied any allegations against them.
"The factual errors, innuendo and fearful ideology of the 'testimony,' serve to strengthen our conviction to move ahead resolutely in protecting the young and vulnerable from any sort of abuse," Tobin said, "while guaranteeing a safe and respectful environment where all are welcome and breaking down the structures and cultures that enable abuse."
The fact that most of the bishops Vigano criticizes are well-known liberals has led some church experts to suspect his motives.
"This letter is a hit list," said Faggioli. "It's all the people he thinks are bad for the church because of their 'homosexual agenda.'"
    Apparently, that includes Pope Francis.
Vigano saves most of his ammunition for the Pope, who he says he told in 2013 that McCarrick was "a serial predator" but "continued to cover for him."
But the Pope didn't cover for McCarrick. Unlike his predecessors, Francis forced the former cardinal to resign in July.
And Thavis said Vigano's assertions about Benedict putting restrictions on McCarrick, including not allowing him to participate in church events or celebrate Mass in public, are patently false.
"McCarrick appeared at several high-profile events with Benedict," he said.
Still, Thavis and Faggioli, as well as other church experts, said the Vatican should respond in detail to Vigano's charges, even if the Pope himself refuses to do so.
"They still need to answer some questions," Faggioli said. "This is something that cannot be ignored."

You can correct the person, but it would be wrong to assume that Anonymous 2:18 pm represents the entire NCW. The thing is.....you hate the NCW regardless of whether there was a LOL or not.

      3. Dear Anonymous at 10:12 pm,

I assure you they do not hate the NCW because of a LOL. And the jungle is a hate group. There are comments in the jungle wishing Archbishop Apuron to be in hell. So, what do you call that if it is not hatred. See the weblink below and then ask yourself what kind of person would wish death on Archbishop Apuron. If wishing someone to die is not hatred, then what is? Correct the person if the LOL bothers you, but understand that they hate the NCW regardless of whether the LOL is there or not.

    5. To the person who wrote "Not for publication":

As you requested, I did not publish your comment; however, I will tell you this. Pope Francis said to dig for the truth. Archbishop Vigano accused the pope of cover-up, stating that the Pope lifted the sanctions imposed on Cardinal McCarrick by Pope Benedict XVI. Below is a timeline of Cardinal McCarrick. Nowhere in that timeline did it say he was sanctioned by Pope Benedict XVI.

      https://www.catholicregister.org/home/international/item/27795-timeline-on-archbishop-mccarrick-s-life-ministry-abuse-claims-made-against-him

      Furthermore, according to news reports:

"Viganò's letter claims that Benedict's sanctions on McCarrick barred the prelate from celebrating Mass publicly or traveling, and ordered him to live a life of prayer and penance.

That claim appears contradicted by the historical record, as McCarrick was seen celebrating numerous public Masses throughout Benedict's papacy and continued traveling around the world until a June announcement that the Vatican had ordered his removal from ministry over an accusation of abuse that had been deemed credible.

Since release of Viganò's statement, numerous photos have emerged of McCarrick at the Vatican after 2009, including one of him greeting Benedict on Feb. 28, 2013, the day he renounced the papacy."

It is bad enough that bishops in the past covered up the child sexual abuse cases. They did not look for the truth. If they had, the priests found guilty of sexually abusing children would have been punished rather than being moved around from one parish to another. Is the Church now going to get into the practice of making false accusations against the Pope and other bishops? Are they not interested in the truth?

      1. As long as the church is more concern with saving face, things will never be right. The church doesn't want to look like they're protecting child abusers. That was how they looked like in the past when they abandoned the victims of sexual abuse.

50 years from now, how will the church look like when they discover they protected false accusers and abandoned falsely accused priests like Fr. MacRae? Investigate the allegations rather than jumping to conclusions. The only ones who appear to be more level headed are the investigative reporters who took Pope Francis advice to search for the truth.

Fulton Sheen said that its up to the laity to make sure that their bishops act like bishops and their priests act like priests.

    7. Dear Diana, as you said before, Cardinal McCarrick and the gay lobby of clergy were implanted into the Holy Catholic Mother Church by extreme liberals. You are right, they have an agenda to compromise, bring down and corrupt Catholic clergy! I personally don't believe any single word Cardinal McCarrick is uttering, because he is speaking for an arrogant gay mafia of high ranking priests, bishops and cardinals. This mafia is getting stronger and stronger, ever increasing in power inside Catholic leadership.

The clouds gathering above our little island will bring more blame, finger-pointing, infighting and calamities. I am so sad... Please, recall that Archbishop Apuron stood up for family values, against gay marriage! He represented the consequential Catholic standpoint on traditional values. His courage facing the powerful gay lobby was exemplary. Who is standing up now against the gay mafia of Catholic clergy?! Who is protecting traditional family values? Who gives us hope of renewal in midst of gathering calamities?

Lord Jesus, remember your Church at a time of increasing turmoil and division.

      1. Dear Faithfully yours,

It is right to remove Cardinal McCarrick and any other priests who has committed sexual misconduct with seminarians and other priests. It is right to remove a seminarian who makes any sexual suggestions to another seminarian, but this does not mean to go on a warlock hunt for priests and seminarians. Sex abuse polices have already been in place. The Pennsylvania sexual abuse report are cases that happened DECADES ago. Many of those priests are already dead.

Archbishop Vigano is a conservative. I am also a conservative. I even voted for Donald Trump despite that my vote does not count because I am from Guam. Nevertheless, it would be wrong to make false accusation against the Pope just because one THINKS the Pope is a liberal. Since he came into office, many conservatives were wary of Pope Francis and it would not come as a surprise if some of those conservatives want to see him resign. It is clear that reforms are needed in the Church, but we should not bring false accusations and call for the Pope's resignation as a way to bring about reforms.

Some conservatives feel that Pope Francis is a liberal because they find him tolerant toward gays and did not like his response when he told a reporter, "Who am I to judge." What some conservatives do not see is that there is a difference between a gay person and the ACT of homosexuality just as there is a difference between the sinner and the sin. We are to love the sinner, but not the sin. We are to love the homosexual, but not the ACT of homosexuality. When Pope Francis said, "Who am I to judge" in reference to homosexuals, his comment is neither a liberal nor a conservative viewpoint. His comment came from the teachings of Christ who told us not to judge. Christians do not judge people to hell. They can preach that homosexuality is an intrinsic disorder as the Catechism calls it, but only God can judge. Above all, we are to love all people regardless of their sexual orientation. Unfortunately, some conservatives see the letter of the law and nothing of the spirit of the law.

      3. Dear Anonymous at 5:02 pm,

Do you remember the reason you wanted Archbishop Apuron out? Well, let me remind you. You stood against Archbishop Apuron because he wanted a convicted sex offender removed from working in the Dededo parish. Do you remember now?

You and the jungle stood up to protect a convicted sex offender (Joseph Lastimosa) and you stood up for a priest who refused to remove that convicted sex offender. Now, with Archbishop Byrnes sex abuse policy, do you think Joseph Lastimosa can volunteer at the Dededo parish? Of course not.

You and the jungle protected a convicted sex offender, and then you switched sides, saying that you were for the victims all along. You and the jungle protected a convicted sex offender and worked to oust an archbishop who wanted sex offenders removed from working or doing voluntary work in the parishes.

        Delete
      4. Yep. This whole controversy on Guam started with the removal of Fr.Paul. Apuron told Fr. Paul to remove a sex offender from working in the parish and he didn't do it. JW stood up for Fr. Paul and Lastimoza.

        Delete
      5. Doesn't matter how the controversy started. The main thing is that the church rid itself of all these pedophiles and protect the innocent children who were the most vulnerable at such a young age.

It's almost hypocritical to hear that the NCW are so focused on lastimoza's conviction that none of you have given him any credit for turning his life around and staying away from going back to prison. Yes the guy has been convicted but he served his time too and hasn't gone back. Don't any of you think he saw his mistake, faced it and turned his life around?

You all talk about forgiveness but it seems that the focus is on his past and don't see that the church should be open to everyone since we are God's children. Maybe Fr. Paul saw this and gave lastimosa a chance but at the same time keeping a close eye on him too.

We all should look at ourselves and own up to our mistakes and focus on trying to live a better life with everyone. I know it's the hardest thing to do but the best thing we all can do is try rather then run or deflect what the church tries to teach us.

      6. Dear Diana, I sincerely think one cannot dislike and attack both Cardinal McCarrick and Pope Francis at the same time! Pope Francis condemned the LGBT lifestyle of McCarrick and imposed sanctions on him! This speaks for itself. Pope Francis is on the side of family values, while Cardinal McCarrick is of the side of the LGBT mafia. So they are on opposing ends of the truth!

My question was who will protect family values on Guam? Archbishop Apuron stood up against gay marriage and supported traditional families. Now, who is doing that on our island? I don't really care of understand much about politics. Political conservatives or liberals are not my concern. I respect President Trump, but he is a Protestant, we all know it. My concern is conservative values inside the Catholic Church and not outside in politics. Politicians take care of politics, but we Catholics should take care of Catholic values inside our own church! I am for traditional Catholic values which is not exactly the same as conservative politics in the world!

The Pennsylvania legislature is inspecting the Guam procedures to lift the statute of limitations on childhood sexual abuses. They are considering to implement the same in Philadelphia. This would be terrible, a new scathing wound on the body of the church for decades to come! Everybody would face suffering there just like we face it here on Guam. We have to admit that this kind of legislation is possible because of a long-long period of neglect of regulation and tolerance of sin among our church leaders.

The Catholic Church teaches that sexual life outside of marriage is wrong! It does not matter if we talk about straight of LGBT kind of sexual life, what it matters is that it is not sanctioned by Holy Matrimony! It is plain wrong! Cardinal McCarrick and other gays among priests, bishops and cardinals are not living in chastity! They are not leading a chaste life, that is how we know they are of the LGBT mafia. I don't believe any word of Cardinal McCarrick who is speaking for his ilk. But I believe Pope Francis who imposed heavy penalties on him for his open transgressions and sinful behavior!

Now, if Pope Benedict has done the same or not 10 years ago, it is not an undecidable question. Unlike accusations about the distant past, the sanctions imposed on Cardinal McCarrick by Pope Benedict can easily be checked on and verified. Both Pope Benedict and Theodore McCarrick are still alive.

I pray to our Good Lord that we don't lose faith during the incoming tests, trials and calamities.

      7. Dear Anonymous at 5:11 am,

It does matter how the controversy started because it has shown the jungle to be a hypocrite. They defended a convicted sex offender and murderer. They defended him because he repented. Yet, these same people crucified Father Brouillard who also repented. They called for Archbishop Apuron's resignation because he wanted Lastimoza removed from working or doing voluntary work in the parish. Yet, Archbishop Byrnes has the same policy, but they do not call for his resignation.

Both Archbishop Apuron and Archbishop Byrnes had the same policy regarding sex offenders working and doing volunteer work in the parish for the same reason. Since the 2002 sex abuse scandal broke out, the Church needed to do something to gain the trust of the Catholic faithful again and reassure them the safety of their children. It was for this reason those policies were put in place. The jungle went against Archbishop Apuron for something that even Archbishop Byrnes follow. That is hypocrisy.

      8. Actually Diana, you are wrong about apuron and archbishop Byrnes. Aspirin only created drama because the NCW wanted to move into and control the church on this island by controlling all the parishes and retaliating against anyone who questioned apuron.

Apuron and priests like quitugua and edivaldo were quick to take over a lot of positions in such a short time while cristobol was there to spin a lot of situations.

With archbishop Byrnes, he's stood strong by his flock and hasn't ran away. He's placed people who actually are fitting for the positions they hold.

      9. Dear Anonymous at 12:06 pm,

No, you are incorrect. The fact that Archbishop Apuron did not put any RMS priest in Santa Barbara is evidence that his only intention was to remove Father Paul for disobedience. Father Dan was installed as parochial administrator, and Father Dan does not walk in the Way. It was Archbishop Byrnes who installed an RMS priest in the Dededo parish. Father Michael Jucutan, who walks in the Way, was assigned as Parochial Vicar of Santa Barbara Church by Archbishop Byrnes.
