My Response

This post is in response to the following person who made the comment below:

AnonymousFebruary 15, 2020 at 9:40 AMI know J. R. San Agustin. You’re right that he would write on JungleWatch. He used sit in his wheelchair to join the Rosaries across the street from the Cathedral BEFORE the picketing began. He didn’t picket. His frail body couldn’t stand being pushed in his wheelchair in the picket line. Others in wheelchairs picketed but not J. R. San Agustin.
Dear Anonymous at 9:40 am,
I disagree.  A public demonstration takes many forms.  It can be a sit-in, boycott, picketing, etc.  Due to his disability, Mr. San Agustin chose to protest through a sit-in.  In fact, he took part in the protest by leading the rosary.  According to the Pacific Daily News dated December 20, 2015:
Retired priest Joe San Agustin leads a prayer during the Concerned Catholics of Guam silent protest across the street from the Cathedral Basilica in Hagatna on Dec. 20.

  1. Dear Diana:

Actually you wrote in the original post (Intentions of Heart) that “J. R. San Agustin was well-known to write in the jungle blog and protest in the PICKET LINE.” (my emphasis of the words you used)

Yes, J. R. San Agustin took part in a protest by leading a prayer as shown in the PDN photo above. But that is different from a PICKET LINE.

By definition a picket line is a boundary established at the entrance by persons to dissuade people from entering or to inform people. As you can see from caption of the photo that J. R. San Agustin and others are positioned ACROSS THE STREET from the Cathedral Basilica. That caption verifies that J. R. San Agustin WAS NOT IN A PICKET LINE that day. Behind the group is a wall that was set up while the Legislature Building was being renovated so no entrance is being blocked so J. R. San Agustin is taking part in a protest but not in a PICKET LINE as you originally claimed.

When the protest/public demonstration changed to the PICKET LINE on the sidewalks in front of the Cathedral J. R. San Agustin WAS NOT IN THE PICKET LINE as you claimed in “Intentions of the Heart.”

    Thank you.

    1. Dear Anonymous at 8:18 am,

Why do you only look at the words “picket line”? It is a PROTEST......that is the point. He participated in that SAME protest despite that he was not walking in the line. The topic of my original post was “Intentions of the Heart.” Mr. San Agustin’s intention was one of participating in a protest whose goal is to remove the Archbishop’s right to due process. Despite that he was unable to walk does not exclude him from that SAME protest. However, now that he himself is accused of the same offense, I hope he now understands the importance of due process and the rule of law.

You can also see Archbishop Byrnes walking in the picket line, but he was NOT participating in the protest. As he said in his interview, he came to greet them because he wanted to know them, and then he entered the church.

    2. Dear Diana:

The reason for my attention to the term PICKET LINE which is the term you chose to describe the actions of J. R. San Agustin is because it is a lie.

If you had written that J.R. San Agustin had participated in a PROTEST you would have been correct. But, as written, your statement is wrong.

You always want precision in language so I just wanted to help you to be precise too.

      Have a great day.

    3. Dear Anonymous at 10:16 am,

This is what I stated: “J.R. San Agustin was well-known to write in the jungle blog and protest in the picket line.”

You chose to focus on the words “picket line” despite that the word “protest” is in the same sentence. You are simply arguing semantics. Regardless of whether one is sitting, walking or standing, their INTENTIONS were the same. In other words, one can still sit and hold up a placard or even wear the same uniform as the protesters while the rest walks, that person sitting is still ONE and together in participation with the protesters in the picket line.

    4. @Anon. 10:16 am, Instead of accusing Diana of lying, it would be beneficial on your part to ask her to clarify what she meant. Obviously, you misunderstood what Diana meant. J.R. San Nicholas didn’t walk in the picket line, but he took part in it. That’s what Diana was saying.

    5. Diana's words are clearly a true respresentation of events and in no way misrepresents what J.R San Agustin did. However the person refuting Diana is clearly trying to misrepresent her and what she wrote by nit picking single words outside of their context. Btw this is the same tactic protestants use with scripture in order to create their own narrative for the bible.
