Three archbishops visiting Guam in January

 by Jolene Toves

Guam - The Catholic Church will be welcoming a visit from three archbishops in January.

As the local Catholic church celebrates its jubilee year as a diocese they also welcome a pastoral visit from the secretary of the Vatican Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, Archbishop Savio Hon Tai-Fai. Father Adrian Cristobal is chancellor for the Archdiocese of Hagatna and told KUAM News, "We are very happy and are very happy to welcome this pastoral visit a pastoral visit is exactly what it is like what Archbishop [Anthony] Apuron is actually doing right now he is going to the parishes he's visiting the people visiting the sick celebrating masses visiting the groups this is a pastoral visit done by the congregation."

Archbishop Savio will be accompanied by Reverend Father Tadeusz Nowak, and Archbishop Martin Krebs. You may recall Archbishop Krebs is the Vatican's ambassador or apostolic delegate to the Pacific Islands and was recently on Guam during which time he met with local clergy. After that meeting Father Adrian said Krebs had instructed them to build bridges with the local clergy with an open dialogue and reconciliation. He said, "They'll be visiting members of the clergy and the religious and member of the different groups and we believe it is a very fruitful visit we're looking forward to it and we believe it will help build a communion between the church and Guam and the Holy Father," he said.

While Father Adrian says this is the pope's way of extending blessings to the church, Jungle Watch blogger Tim Rohr spoke candidly about what he believes is the reason for the pastoral visit. He said, "I realize that the chancery is probably trying to as a precursor to a possible papal visit but in my opinion the person that is coming is the wrong person because if it was a papal visit they would be sending the secretary of the state or somebody from that particular office and so I really think it is an investigation."

While Rohr believes there is something going on and that the visit is so they can "see for themselves". Father Adrian Admantly says there will be no investigation or report, noting, "No in our communications with Vatican they have specifically said it was a pastoral visit to the archdiocese."

Father Adrian says that Archbishop Savio is concerned about the missionary efforts of various churches all throughout the world and because Guam plays a vital role in the evangelization of Micronesia and the pacific region they will want to know what efforts the archdiocese is making. He adds the recent controversies within the church are not the motive for the pastoral visit.

He told KUAM News, "The issues I think we have to look at the issue within a certain context we are a family the church is a family in any family there is going to be differences and as part of the pastoral visit of course I am sure they are aware of the differences that are taking place come and they come with the attitude of a pastoral visit."

    1. Dear Anonymouso at 9:28 am,

Why should the above post not be published? It is good news that three Archbishops are visiting our island out of concern for the evangelization in Asia and the Pacific. As EWTN noted in their article, Guam plays an important role in the evangelization in this region due to our location.

  3. To further understand t rohrs adjenda

Vatican officials and the Arch Diocese state that this visit is a pastoral visit but king t rohr has "in his own" opinion..

He said, "I realize that the chancery is probably trying to as a precursor to a possible papal visit but in my opinion the person that is coming is the wrong person because if it was a papal visit they would be sending the secretary of the state or somebody from that particular office and so I really think it is an investigation."

They are coming to address evangelization....the mission of the church but KiNg RoHr has spoken....he has the power to redirect Vatican priorities. love live the king

  4. Diana, Deacon Steve was removed from his duties as Deacon. It's was originally announced in the PNC news.

Deacon Steve Martinez Fired for Being Part of Concerned Catholics Group
    GUAM
    Pacific News Center

    Written by Janela Carrera

Guam - Newly formed group Concerned Catholics of Guam may have just received its first warning from the Archdiocese of Agana as the group’s treasurer, Deacon Steve Martinez has just confirmed that Archbishop Anthony Apuron has censured him.

PNC Contacted Deacon Steve Martinez today who confirmed for us that Archbishop Anthony Apuron has just censured him and suspended him as a Deacon. The move comes just a week after the newly formed organization Concerned Catholics of Guam held a press conference announcing that they plan to investigate the Archdiocese of Agana. Deacon Martinez tells PNC that the Archbishop ordered him on Wednesday to resign as the group’s treasurer and member or face censureship.

Deacon Martinez says the Archbishop gave him a deadline of 4 pm Thursday afternoon, but he tells PNC that he asked Archbishop Apuron for reconsideration. That was not granted, Deacon Martinez says. The punishment is severe enough that Deacon Martinez says he had to cancel performing a wedding tomorrow because he’s been suspended from his duties.

The deacon received the notice ordering him to resign from CCOG in writing, telling PNC that it was signed by Archbishop Apuron and Chancellor Father Adrian Cristobal.

However, when PNC contacted Father Adrian, he told us that he was not aware of any censureship against Deacon Martinez.

    1. Dear Anonymous at 1:39 pm,

I am not surprised that Steve Martinez was removed from his duties. The Archbishop already told him to resign as the treasurer of CCOG, and he did not. That is a lack of obedience. Didn't Steve Martinez make a promise to be obedient to the Archbishop when he was ordained a Deacon?

By what authority does CCOG have to investigate the Archdiocese of Agana? The intent of this organization was never to help the Catholic Church on Guam. Their real intent was to remove the Archbishop and to place Monsignor James and Father Paul back into their positions. After John Toves' attempt failed, we now see this organization suddenly appear with their names. When the Archbishop invited this group to meet with him, all of them remained anonymous and did not meet with the Archbishop. Now, suddenly after John Toves' failure to remove the Archbishop, this organization revealed their names and want to investigate the Archdiocese??

It has also been over a year since Tim Rohr received a letter from Edwin Cardinal O'Brien, the Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem (of which Tim Rohr is a member). He demanded that Tim Rohr desist in his scandalous activity against the Archbishop. To this day, Tim Rohr remains disobedient. He should also be removed from the Order.

    2. It is scandalous that the NCW should persist in its illicit liturgy, particularly the means of receiving communion. You still have never presented any real proof of special permission to do this.

Every time you celebrate the Eucharist you are all willfully disobeying Rome.

    3. Dear Anonymous at 10:14 am,

We have the approval of the Pope. The Archbishop already said that it was approved by Rome. The fact that you do not believe him is not our problem.

  5. Nice going Archbishop. Really, nice going. And Adrian signing on. But, of course.

  6. The Holy See delegation and recommendations will be the begining of the end of the NCW and their cult practices. No other jurisdiction has ever been visited like this in the history of the church. Apuron wanted a legacy and he is getting one. Good riddance.

    1. Dear L. L.G. Camacho,

The Neocatechumenal Way came from God. What comes from God will not go away and is not a cult. The Archbishop was the one who received a private audience with the Pope. So, when the Archbishop says that the Pope supports us, then the rest of Vatican supports us.

    3. So AAA meets the pope and then comes home and 1. Threatens legal action to those defaming him and 2 suspends deacon Martinez. I Would infer that the pope Gave AAA his support. Had he not, AAA would not have done any of those things.

    4. Dear Anonymous at 4:04 pm,

No, he comes home from the Pope to learn that he was 1) being accused by John Toves for molesting a relative whom he has never spoken to and 2) when Toves failed to remove him, the representatives of the jungle clan organized an attempt to remove the Archbishop and install Monsignor James and Father Paul back to their positions by positing themselves as " Concerned Catholics."

      Gospel of Matthew......Chapters 5, 6 and 7.

I will pray that before reading; you yourself pray to God to open your heart to the Word.

  7. Does Jungle Watch actually believe the populace is a bunch of peasants without an education who can be lied to so easily? The reason they come out with such lies is because their fanatics defend them in everything they do. These people think they are demigods and each has his/her personal saint (the most trendy is Saint Benavente), which they'll defend at all costs. If Guam were larger there would be war.

    1. And who would be responsible for this so-called war?? Archbishop Apuron! As the leader of the Catholic Church on Guam, he could have prevented this from happening, but he let it go too far and now he has no choice but for the Vatican to step in and fix the mess.

    2. Dear Anonymous at 10:54 pm,

The Archbishop is not responsible for the priests who went to the media and involve the laity to side with them against the Archbishop. He is only responsible for his own actions.

  8. Dear Diana, I already posted this comment before but in view of this upcoming visit, I would like to publish it again : "To put it mildly, I find it shocking that a man who has served faithfully the island community for more than twenty-five years with zeal and fatherly care should be slandered so viciously by the media. It is true that the main vilifier is not from our island. He is a foreigner. But still it is startling to see our Archbishop maligned so cruelly.

What crimes did he commit? Well, he served his Church loyally and diligently for many many years. He tried to help those in need. He defended those who could not defend themselves. He made himself available to all and sundry. He prays unceasingly for his flock; they say he gets up at 3am every day to pray. Despite his precarious health, he has no qualms in joining the faithful in the island’s events and in fact he spends most Saturdays of the years going from parish to parish celebrating their fiestas. He is very active in leading his people. He is a true shepherd." Biba Archbishop.

  9. Diana -- See how even off-islanders are tuning in to the events unfolding in Guam:

"As a priest of another diocese following the unfortunate turn of events on the American island of Guam evident that a series breakdown of ecclesial relationship between the ordinary Anthony Sablan Apuron Ofm cap and the catholic clergy exists. In these particular cases Apostolic Pastoral Visits begin to try and amend the situation from becoming the cause for the disunity of the church. However, in this particular circumstance it does now appear Archbishop Apuron is the present cause of grave disunity between the ordinary and the clergy. Apostolic visitors will need to discuss an immediate solution to the disturbing events unfolding between the Archbishop and the Catholics of Guam. Never before in the American Catholic Church has an ordinary insulted so many priests as on the Island of Guam."

    1. Dear Anonymous at 6::24 am,

I do not know who this priest is, but it appears he does not know the entire story. It is clear that there is division in the clergy. However, it was the non-Neo clergy who created further division in the Church when they went to the media and involve the laity to side with them against the Archbishop. Rather than going to the Archbishop and resolving the issue at their level, they decided to go to the media and involve the laity in going against the Archbishop. There is even a deacon who involve himself in an non-profit organization called "Concerned Catholics of Guam, Inc." If this deacon had a problem with the Archbishop, why did he not try to resolve that problem in the clergy level. Why involve himself with the laity who are clearly opposed to the Archbishop?

    Fr.Matthew BlockleyDecember 21, 2014 at 11:33 PM

I am not a scholar and never claimed to be. But I have practical common sense and learnt well from the many people who surround me. Ecclesial power is rather like me holding 100 Bullets once I fire a bullet I have only 99 bullets left, and I let them feel the bullet but the pain eventually passes. In other words ecclesial power should always be felt and respected, but rarely ever used in life. Archbishop Anthony Sablan Apuron has once again aimlessly fired a bullet, exercised in an abusive way his power, yes, it has been felt, caused some pain, but by firing he has shown how useless his power really is. Ecclesial power authority, what ever you want to call it, should be felt, respected, and never used. archbishop Apuron, you are a lame duck, no one listens to you.

    1. Dear Anonymous at 9:27 am,

Someone should ask Father Blockley how he feels about Pope Francis removing the entire financial board of the Vatican and replacing them with someone else. How does he feel about the Pope Francis excommunicating an Australian priest. It appears that he used much of his authority to clean up the Vatican.

    2. Diana can he continue to be Priest hiding in Manila and live with clear conscience every day. Bishop Thomas Camacho ordered him to come back and refuse. Who ordain him really?

Hiding like a renegade is not pastoral work but worst than a criminal. Tim harbor homosexual, liars, criminals, home-wreckers and former seminarian who use to be a Catholic. Basically anyone against the Archbishop whether who believes the opposite of right he is with them. He called Father Isaias a Protestant Clergy Father? Ha you'll be the judge. Tim is tired both mentally and physically. observe his post in 2-3 morning. He lose sleep. I hope Diana you sleep well cause I do. I don't lose sleep with this cause I'm in peace with my Archbishop
